Full Review

The installation has no junk toolbar offers and is easy and straightforward. Running the program requires elevated administrative privileges. In Windows Vista and higher, right click and select ‘Run as Administrator’.

EASEUS Partition Master has a relatively simple Windows XP-like interface

The program is relatively straightforward and easy to use. To create new partitions, simply drag along with the purple borders of the disk drive bar shown at the top of the window. This will create some unallocated space.

To create a new partition, simply click Create Partition in the sidebar and choose from the available options including drive letter, how much of the available space to use, and much more. There are a lot more options offered here than there is in Windows Disk Management Utility.

Partition Creation Options

After you’re done, simply hit Apply. Most changes such as creating a new partition will require a computer reboot before the operation starts. After your operating system loads, EASEUS will start before the Windows Logon screen appears. Press any key within a few seconds to abort the operation.

EASEUS executes your selected disk operations before your system fully boots up

After all the operations are complete, EASEUS will automatically reboot your system again.

The entire operation is a lot smoother than my experience with creating disk partitions through Windows Disk Management in the Control Panel.

EASEUS contains useful extra features such as Partition Recovery, which searches your partitions to attempt to recover data lost due to accidental deletion, partition loss, software crash, malware, etc… The free edition provides 1 GB of recovery.

EASEUS Partition Recovery Tool to recover lost data

The Partition Copy feature allows for the copy and migration of data to unallocated space on a hard drive. This helps protect data loss from unexpected situations, such as a system crash.

Have you ever tried booting up Windows and got an error message saying Operating System Not Found or a blank screen when trying to boot up? This is usually caused by the MBR (Master Boot Record) being corrupted. Rather than reinstall the entire operating system, EASEUS can help rebuild the MBR.

Master Boot Record rebuild options

EASEUS also features disk defragmentation to reorganize storage on the disk to improve performance. This is a useful extra feature, but unlike utilities like Smart Defrag, does not feature advanced options, but rather just a simple one click defragmentation.

Overall, the application works very well and is quite straightforward to use. It does the main job of managing partitions very well. The interface could use a huge makeover though as the menus look like Windows Classic and the font used for the disk partition listings look very strange combined with the Windows font for the navigation.

Final Verdict

EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition is an excellent tool to create and manage your disk partitions and it also throws in some useful extra features. It has excellent options and the only thing it is lacking is an attractive interface. Overall, it does its main functions very well and I highly recommend EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition for all your partitioning needs.

The non-profit Mozilla has just released the first beta of the next generation of Firefox earlier today. Firefox 4.0 Beta 1 features a brand new user interface, support for multiple new future web technologies including enhanced HTML support, WebSockets, and a more aggressive update schedule. This marks Mozilla’s first release of their plan for the future of the world’s second most popular browser.

Firefox 4.0 introduces a new UI as well as a line of new features and improvements

Unless you are someone like me who’s been playing around with nightly builds and/or the Strata40 theme, the new theme will take a while to get used to. Tabs are on top in the Windows version, a feature started by Google Chrome, then adapted by Safari 4 beta builds (but removed in the final) and Opera. Mozilla had also followed Opera’s lead by compacting the classic menu bar into a single Firefox button in the top left corner.

The new Firefox button saves space by compacting the classic menu bar into a single button. The classic menu button can still be toggled through the Customize menu or temporarily shown by using the Alt key.

Top tabs will come to Mac and Linux versions when their default themes are updated to support this.

The add-ons interface has received a major overhaul, but according to Mozilla, it will change in the final version, so don’t get too used to it. The final version will integrate the JetPack SDK, which will allow add-ons to be installed without restarting the browser.

The new overhauled Firefox add-ons manager. Mozilla says that the interface is not final.

Of course, Firefox 4 packs in much more than just the obvious visual appearance changes. There are hundreds of under the hood changes, including a new HTML5 parser and support for more HTML5 form controls. Firefox now also natively supports the HTML5 WebM HD video format, therefore allowing Firefox to use YouTube’s new HTML5 on some WebM enabled videos.

This YouTube video ('Parisian Love') is played on Firefox 4.0 Beta 1 without utilizing Flash at all thanks to the new support for WebM.

Other features include improved APIs for WebSockets and HTML history. There is also partial support for CSS transitions.

Windows 7 jumplist support is also included in this release.

Firefox 4.0 includes support for Windows 7 Jump Lists.

Firefox 4.0 also includes a Windows 7 taskbar icon download progress bar overlay, similar to Opera and Internet Explorer.

Firefox 4.0 Beta 1 scores 97/100 on the Acid3 Web Standards test. Almost there Mozilla!

Firefox 4.0 Beta 1's Acid3 test result

As promised, the Out-of-Process Plugin feature is now available to Mac users.

In security so far, Firefox 4 introduces a small but useful change. CSS “.visited” selectors now prevent web sites from checking a user’s browsing history.

Mozilla says to expect updates every two weeks. As part of the beta, an add-on named ‘Feedback’ is installed and adds a Feedback button onto the toolbar which Mozilla uses to conduct optional feedback surveys about the new browser to help development.

The first feedback survey message

Want to try Firefox 4.0 Beta for yourself? Please note that this is a beta release and features are subject to change and may not work properly.

Wouldn’t it be great to be able to create, edit, and share documents online and then be able to access them from anywhere? Fortunately, there are many great applications out there that allow users to do this. And most of them are completely free, such as Google Docs and Microsoft’s new Office Web Apps.

First Class Flyer Issue 11

First Class Flyer is a weekly series published every Friday comparing multiple free software or web services and applications.

Hello! I’m Brian, your host for this edition of First Class Flyer. This week, we’re taking a close look at Google Docs and Microsoft Office Web Apps, two excellent free online document editing tools.

As always, before we begin, let’s introduce each of our contestants.

About Our Contestants

Google Docs is a part of Google Apps and offers the creation, editing, collaboration, and sharing of documents, spreadsheets, presentations, forms, and drawings. It also allows users to upload any file and use Google Docs as free file storage with 1 GB of free storage. This requires a Google Account.

Office Web Apps, the successor of Office Live Workspace, is the new kid in town. It shares storage Windows Live SkyDrive and is an online version of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote and allows the sharing and collaboration of the respective office files. SkyDrive allows users to upload any file with 25 GB of free storage. This requires a Windows Live Account.

Round 1: Supported File Types

How many file formats does each service support for editing?

Download menu for Google Documents

Google Docs supports a wide range of file types.

Documents :

Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx)

OpenDocument text (.odt)

StarOffice text (.sxw)

Rich text (.rtf)

Plain text (.txt)

HTML (.htm, .html)

Presentations:

Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt, .pps)

Spreadsheets:

Microsoft Excel (.xls, .xlsx) files

OpenDocument spreadsheets (.ods)

Comma-separated values (.csv)

PDF files and images can also be converted to text format and made into a Google Document when uploaded.

Office Web Apps can only open, edit, and save Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx), PowerPoint (.ppt, .pptx), Excel (.xls, .xlsx), and OneNote (.one).

Google Docs: 5
Office Web Apps: 2

Round 2: Free Storage Space

Both services allow users to upload any file and use the service as storage.

Google Docs allows users to upload any file with a free storage limit of 1 GB. The max file size is 1024 MB, which would be using up all your storage. Files converted for editing do not count toward the storage space and in order to convert, documents must be no more than 500 KB, presentations must be no more than 10 MB, spreadsheets must be no more than 1 MB, and PDF/images should be no more than 2 MB.

Office Web Apps shares storage with SkyDrive, which allows users to upload up to 25 GB of files for free. Files can be set to private with friends or just yourself or public to share with the world. The file size limit is 50 MB.

Google Docs: 1.5 (6.5 total)
Office Web Apps: 5 (7 total)

Round 3: Sharing and Collaboration

Both services allow you to share documents with other users with an option to allow others to only view the file or allow them to edit.

Google Docs offers real time collaboration where edits are saved and shown to everyone else instantly.

Google Docs Live Editing

Google Docs also offers integrated group chat in the sidebar. Users can chat with everyone who is editing right from the sidebar without having to leave the page.

Google Docs Integrated Chat

Office Web Apps allows sharing the document with others so they can contribute, but unfortunately only allows one user to edit at a time. If someone else is already editing the document, you might be greeted with this message upon opening the document.

Another user is editing the document.

Both feature revision history and the ability to revert to an older version.

Google Docs: 5 (11.5 total)
Office Web App: 1 (8 total)

Round 4: Ease of Use

Google Docs uses a classic menu bar and toolbars under it.

Google Docs - Editing

On the document listing screen, it is organized in an email inbox like manner with a navigation panel and folders on the left sidebar and the list of files in each folder in the large right panel.

Google Docs 'All Items' page

The listing page of Office Web Apps uses a Windows Explorer and SkyDrive like folder listing, which is definitely a bit more difficult to use than the way Google Docs does it. Hovering over items would provide some file type specific options.

Office File Manager

Office Web Apps uses the Office Ribbon interface including the application menu.

Office Web Apps look very similar to Microsoft Office 2010

Both have very easy to use editing toolbars. However, Google Docs takes this round for having a much easier to use file manager.

Google Docs: 5 (16.5 total)
Office Web Apps: 3.5 (11.5 total)

Round 5: Overall Feature Set

How do the two compare in features?

Google Docs includes many of the most popular features found in modern word processors including spell check, tables, equations, comments, footnotes, special characters, and much more. In spreadsheets, there is a translation function as well as data validation.

Google Docs provides detailed Word Count information including the Reading Level

Google Docs goes beyond regular documents and even allows for the creation of web forms which can be used to create a web form such as a contact form or survey and arranges the data in a spreadsheet.

Google Docs has a very easy to use form generator with several question types and form themes

Office Web Apps is a greatly slimmed down version of the full Microsoft Office suite. It lacks many features found in the full version like footnotes, comments, find and replace, line spacing, and much more. It contains only the core basic features of each application.

Similar to the full product, there are item specific ribbon tabs. One of the great things about the Ribbon interface.

There is a button to open with the full product (if it is installed), but only works if you are running Internet Explorer and Office 2003 (or higher). If you wish to run another browser, Office 2010 (which includes a browser plugin) must be installed.

Users not running Internet Explorer + Office 2003 (or higher) or Office 2010 will be greeted with this message

For providing significantly more features, Google Docs takes this round.

Google Docs: 5 (21.5 total)
Office Web Apps: 2 (13.5 total)

With Office Web Apps trailing by 8 points, it means the winner of the 11th weekly issue of First Class Flyer is…

Google Docs is an excellent online document editor, both feature rich and easy to use. It’s optimized for sharing and collaboration with real-time editing, built in chat, revision history, and much more.

Which online document editor do you prefer? Google Docs, Office Web Apps, or another one? Please share it with us in the comments.

This concludes this week’s issue of First Class Flyer. Be sure to join us next Friday for another comparison!

Web of Trust (WOT), the popular online security community and site rating add-on, has just announced that their extension for Safari is now officially available, thanks to the new Safari 5 supporting extensions.

WOT for Safari

Due to the gray color scheme of the Safari toolbars, the extension is slightly different than it is on other browsers.

The colored icon fades after a few seconds.

When you visit a website, the WOT add-on looks up the rating as usual. But instead of showing the colored rating on the toolbar, the rating color shows up on a small box in the corner and fades away after a few seconds. The toolbar button has a check mark for green, and exclamation for red.

The colorblind version, however continues to use its regular colorblind shutter icons on the toolbar.

WOT Colorblind Version

Everything else works the same as browsers, including the search result rating icons, rating scorecards, and warning screens. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a block feature, which goes beyond just warning the user but rather blocks dangerous pages from loading entirely.

Safari WOT Warning

Are you someone who can’t get enough of the sound of swarming insects from the World Cup? YouTube, like its parent company Google, loves pranks and obviously couldn’t resist. They have added a new Vuvuzela button just for you.

YouTube's New Vuvuzela Button

The Vuvuzela is a traditional instrument commonly played in South Africa at football (soccer) games, which includes the World Cup 2010, being hosted by South Africa. Fans watching the games have listened to the vuvuzela’s buzzing for days.

Many found the sound so irritating that many television networks have attempted to filter them out and many guides showed up about how to block the noise from their television and computers. Such a guide exists on VideoCrunch (TechCrunch Video). The noise is not blocked by FIFA despite complaints because of the traditional importance of it.

The button doesn’t seem to show up on all videos, but most of the videos I’ve watched so far seem to have them. Here’s an example (Parisian Love – Search Stories).

What do you think of this fun new addition? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

Over a month ago, we covered Firefox 3.6.4 Beta. While this may seem like your average minor update with some security, stability, and bug fixes, Firefox 3.6.4 features Lorentz, the highly anticipated OOPP (Out-of-Process-Plugin) feature. This isolates plugins like Flash and Silverlight into a separate process so if they crash, only the plugin goes down and the user just needs to refresh the page to restart it without having to drag the entire browser down with it.

This is similar to a feature first introduced with Google Chrome almost two years ago.

Adobe is running as a separate process.

After some delay, this release is finally available to all, but with a little catch. The OOPP feature is currently only available to Windows and Linux users. The non-profit states that such a feature would require major changes to Firefox’s infrastructure to make it available to Mac OS X. However, they also promise that it will be available in Firefox 4.0, coming later this year.

Adobe Flash Crashed on YouTube but only the plugin goes down.

What do you think of this not-so-minor update to Firefox? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

Book Review

I found this book a very interesting read. Its goal is to assist users at getting started with deploying and managing a cost-effective virtual environment using the free VirtualBox software and the author does this very well. Rather than having page after page of paragraphs of text, the author provides a step by step guide to do everything complete with clear screenshots for many steps. What’s really great is that it literally goes through every single step, including pressing ‘OK’ buttons.

Chapter 4 - Installing Guest Additions and Advanced Settings: Activating the Seamless Windows feature (p. 128)

You don’t need to familiar with anything, not even how to install VirtualBox. This book teaches you everything.

I enjoyed reading Chapter 8, which covers how to manage virtual machines from a remote computer. I never knew about this and the author does an excellent job walking through all the steps including exactly what every command is and what each command does.

I like how the author occasionally stops and has a section called What Just Happened? and summarizes what we have just done in the past few steps. This helps sum up everything and I found this to be extremely useful. The following is the What Just Happened? section from Chapter 8 – p. 261:

What Just Happened?

It’s nice to know you can use an alternative GUI for your virtual machine, right? I mean, it would be an excellent alternative if you need to install several virtual machines in one or more host PCs and the users aren’t familiarized with VirtualBox because they just want to use the virtual machines. You could create a desktop shortcut for each virtual machines so the user could just double-click on the shortcut, and the VBoxSDL interface would pop up with the virtual machine screen. And you wouldn’t have to worry about the user messing up the virtual machines. How about that?

The book is quite easily written and easily understandable. It’s not boring or too formal, but written in an entertaining and engaging way. Personally, I don’t enjoy reading tutorials that are very formal. No “fancy words either”.

Rather than saying Don’t unplug anything until the operating system is installed. To install the operating system…, the author says But wait! Don’t start unplugging stuff yet! You first need to install the server oprating system, as I’ll show you in the following subsection… In my own opinion, the second example is much more interesting and keeps me interested and this is exactly what the author does.

Chapter 7 - Using Virtual Appliances: Using the TurnKey WordPress Virtual Appliance (p. 216)

Don’t be fooled by the title. This book covers much more than just the basics. It covers advanced skills such as remote management as well as useful tips and tweaks for the guest operating system. For example, Chapter 4 covers not only guest additions but also has a tutorial on enabling the Desktop Cube Compiz effect on the Ubuntu guest system.

The author covers just about every feature that is available in VirtualBox 3.1, from basic virtual machine management to Virtual Applicances such as Turnkey Linux WordPress.

Summary

Pros: Very detailed and easy to understand step by step guides from the basics to advanced tricks, complete with screenshots. Covers just about all features to unlock the full potential of VirtualBox. Engaging and somewhat informal. Extra notes and comments thrown in to help the reader comprehend the steps better.

Cons: A few typos here and there, such as having a header that says Time for Action – using OpenOffice.org but the tutorial under it is explaining how to install a trial of Microsoft Office 2007 (Chapter 3 – p. 98).

Verdict: VirtualBox 3.1 – Beginner’s Guide by Alfonso V. Romero is an excellent book for all users of this great free virtualization application, whether you’re just starting out with virtualization or you’re an advanced user who wants to dig deeper into the many possibilities of VirtualBox.
